01

How it is studied

Observation combines several features: apertures, outline, surface ornamentation and dimensions. A reference collection supports identification. When the material does not distinguish species, report the recognisable group instead of assigning unsupported precision.

02

An example to interpret it

Example: two analysts examine the same sample and disagree on five grains. Joint review can identify overlap, damage, focus or different classification rules. Averaging the totals alone does not explain the disagreement.

03

What to check

Enlarging an image does not create detail that the optical system missed. Report taxonomic resolution with the count, especially when comparing manual and automatic identification.
